| Lamesa is located at 32°44′4″N, 101°57′29″W (32.734439, -101.958190)GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.4 km² (4.8 mi²), all land. As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 9,952 people, 3,696 households, and 2,679 families residing in the city. The population density was 803.9/km² (2,080.8/mi²). There were 4,270 housing units at an average density of 344.9/km² (892.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 73.65% White, 4.22% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 19.51% from other races, and 2.13% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 52.96% of the population. There were 3,696 households out of which 34.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.5% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% were non-families. 25.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.20. In the city the population was spread out with 29.7% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who were 65 years of age or older.
